DC Submerged Arc Ferrotungsten Smelting Furnace Overview
The DC submerged arc ferrotungsten alloy smelting furnace is a specialized high-temperature electric reduction furnace designed for producing ferrotungsten alloys (FeW70, FeW75, FeW80) from tungsten concentrate. By combining DC arc heating with submerged operation and carbothermic reduction, the furnace realizes continuous smelting of tungsten concentrate into qualified ferrotungsten alloy at a working temperature of 1800-2000°C, delivering a stable tungsten recovery rate of 97% or above and consistent alloy composition for the special steel and hard alloy industries.
Core Features
- High Tungsten Recovery: Submerged arc operation with reducing atmosphere control minimizes tungsten volatilization loss and slag carry-over, keeping the tungsten recovery rate at 97%-99% and reducing production cost per ton of FeW alloy.
- Stable Alloy Composition: Precise electrode current control and continuous batching ensure uniform carbothermic reduction, producing FeW70/FeW80 alloy with tight carbon and impurity control that meets GB/T 3648 and international standards.
- Energy Efficient Smelting: DC submerged arc heating transfers heat directly into the molten bath, cutting unit power consumption by 10%-15% compared with conventional AC resistance smelting, with lower electrode consumption.
- Continuous Production: Hydraulic tilting furnace body with intermittent tapping and continuous feeding supports 24-hour operation, maximizing annual ferrotungsten output for smelting plants.
- Safe and Environmental: Closed-loop water cooling, furnace gas collection and baghouse dedusting system control dust and fume emissions, meeting industrial environmental protection requirements.

Smelting Process
Tungsten concentrate, iron oxide and carbonaceous reductant are proportioned and continuously charged into the furnace bath. The submerged DC arc melts the charge and drives carbothermic reduction; the produced ferrotungsten alloy settles at the bottom and is tapped through the tilting spout into ingot molds, while the reducing slag is periodically removed. The whole process is monitored by PLC with real-time electrode position and current control.
Application Fields
- Ferrotungsten FeW70/FeW80 production for high-speed steel and tool steel manufacturing;
- Tungsten concentrate and tungsten-bearing scrap resource recovery and alloying;
- Special alloying additive preparation for hard alloys, superalloys and welding materials.
