3000KVA–33000KVA Submerged Arc Furnace for Ferronickel Production
Equipment & Product Full Introduction
1. Product Overview
This series submerged arc melting furnace (commonly called ferronickel electric arc furnace) covers capacity from 3000KVA to 33000KVA, specially designed for smelting laterite nickel ore to produce ferronickel alloy.
Different from ordinary open arc furnaces, it adopts fully submerged electrode smelting technology with self-baking electrodes. By adjusting furnace burden formula, it realizes continuous high-efficiency reduction of nickel laterite ore, stable output of low, medium and high-grade ferronickel.
The whole set supports customized turnkey solutions, widely used in nickel metallurgy plants at home and abroad for ferronickel primary smelting.
2. Working Principle
Main raw materials: laterite nickel ore, coke (reducing agent), limestone flux, silica.
Three self-baking electrodes are inserted deeply into mixed furnace charge. Huge current generates submerged arc heat and resistance heat inside the burden, creating a high-temperature zone of 1400–1700℃.
Carbothermic reduction reaction occurs under high temperature: nickel oxide and iron oxide in nickel ore are reduced into molten ferronickel liquid, gangue components form slag floating above alloy liquid.
Separate tapping of ferronickel alloy and slag, after cooling, crushing and screening to obtain finished ferronickel ingots.
3. Complete Furnace System Composition
3.1 Furnace Main Body
Water-cooled furnace shell, carbon brick/magnesia refractory lining, sealed furnace cover, alloy tapping hole, slag outlet, operation platform. Optional semi-closed / fully closed type for flue gas collection and waste heat recovery.
3.2 Power Supply System
Special high-current smelting transformer, short-net conductive system, reactive power compensation & harmonic filtering device, high/low voltage power distribution cabinet. Power range: 3000KVA / 6300KVA / 12500KVA / 16500KVA / 25000KVA / 33000KVA.
3.3 Electrode Hydraulic Lifting & Clamping Unit
Hydraulic lifting cylinder, copper holding clamps, pressure ring, electrode paste feeding equipment, automatic constant-current control system to stabilize arc length and smelting load.
3.4 Raw Material Batching & Feeding System
Ore silos, automatic weighing batching machine, belt conveyor, sealed top feeding chute, dust suppression feeding structure to reduce material loss and dust emission.
3.5 Circulating Water Cooling & Environmental Protection System
Closed cooling water circulation station, bag dust removal system, flue gas waste heat recovery device, desulfurization equipment, meeting international industrial emission standards.
3.6 Intelligent PLC Central Control System
Real-time monitoring of furnace current, voltage, temperature, furnace pressure and flue gas parameters; automatic overload protection, abnormal alarm and automatic load adjustment, reducing manual operation.

5. Finished Product: Ferronickel (Nickel Iron) Introduction
Main Grades & Chemical Composition
Main product series: Low-grade ferronickel (Ni 4%–8%), medium-grade ferronickel (Ni 10%–15%), high-grade ferronickel (Ni 18%–25%), low phosphorus & low sulfur customized grades.
Main elements: Ni, Fe, minor impurities C, P, S, Cr controlled within international standard range.
Production Raw Materials
Laterite nickel ore, metallurgical coke, limestone flux, quartz sand.
Main Application of Ferronickel Alloy
- Core raw material for stainless steel production: Provide nickel element to form austenitic stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance.
- Alloy additive for special steel: Improve steel toughness, oxidation resistance and rust-proof performance.
- Raw material for nickel-containing castings, wear-resistant alloy castings, engineering machinery accessories.
- Used in steelmaking deoxidation and alloying instead of pure metal nickel, greatly reducing production cost.
