The Ladle Refining Furnace (LRF), also known as the Ladle Furnace (LF), is a critical secondary refining equipment used in the steelmaking process. It is designed to improve the quality of molten steel by adjusting its chemical composition, temperature, and cleanliness. The LRF is typically used after primary steelmaking processes such as the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF).
Working Principle
Charging: Molten steel from the primary furnace is transferred to the ladle.
Heating: The arc heating system raises the temperature of the steel to the desired level.
Stirring: Argon gas is injected to homogenize the steel and promote inclusion removal.
Alloying: Alloying elements are added to adjust the steel's chemical composition.
Degassing (if applicable): In VD/VOD furnaces, the steel is degassed under vacuum to improve purity.
Slag Removal: Slag is removed from the surface of the molten steel.
Tapping: The refined steel is transferred to the next stage, such as continuous casting.
