Product Description
Molten Slag Holding Furnace 4000kVA for Mineral Wool Lines
The furnace receives hot blast furnace or steelmaking slag directly from the tapping system and holds it at 1400-1500 C before the slag is delivered to the fiber forming unit. Because the slag never cools down, the plant avoids the cost and emissions of re-melting cold slag in a second furnace. The unit works as the buffer between an intermittent tapping schedule and a continuous mineral wool line.
Why a Holding Furnace Pays Back Quickly
- No cold slag remelting: every tonne of slag kept hot saves 380-450 kWh that would otherwise be spent melting solid slag again.
- Stable fiber quality: temperature is held within +/- 10 C, so slag viscosity stays constant and fiber diameter variation is reduced.
- Continuous line feeding: 60 t holding capacity absorbs the batch rhythm of furnace tapping and delivers 40-50 t/h to the centrifuge.
- Graphite electrode heating: power is applied only to compensate heat loss, with closed loop control on both current and temperature.
- Long campaign life: corundum mullite hot face, high alumina backup lining and a 120 mm insulation layer cut shell temperature and thermal shock.
Process Flow
- Hot slag is tapped from the smelting furnace through a launder into the sealed charging port.
- Graphite electrodes maintain the bath temperature; the PLC adjusts power as the slag level changes.
- Slag is homogenised in the holding zone; light phase and any residual metal separate by density.
- Residual metal is drained from the bottom metal tap, slag leaves through the forward slag notch.
- Off gas is drawn to a hood and enters the existing dedusting system of the plant.
