Mineral Tailings Fused Mullite Electric Furnace Overview
The mineral tailings fused mullite electric furnace is a high-temperature electric melting furnace developed for the value-added reuse of mineral processing tailings rich in alumina and silica. By proportioning flotation tailings and coal measures tailings with bauxite or alumina and melting at 1900-2100°C in an electric arc furnace, the equipment produces premium fused mullite refractory aggregate from mine waste. It offers mines and dressing plants an integrated solution for tailings reduction, resource recovery and refractory raw material production.
Core Features
- Tailings Value Recovery: Turns accumulated mineral tailings into M60/M70 fused mullite, reducing tailings dam pressure while creating a new revenue stream for mining enterprises.
- Composition Adaptability: Flexible proportioning system compensates for variations in tailings alumina and silica content, ensuring a stable mullite composition with uniform crystal growth.
- Reliable High-Temperature Melting: Electric arc heating sustains 1900-2100°C molten bath conditions, achieving complete mullitization and low bulk density deviation in the final aggregate.
- Low Operating Cost: Continuous feeding and tapping design with optimized electrode control reduces power consumption to 2000-2500 kWh per ton, making tailings treatment economically viable.
- Green Mining Support: Closed-loop cooling, fume purification and slag recycling systems help dressing plants meet green mine and circular economy requirements.

Production Process
Mineral tailings are dewatered, dried, ground and proportioned with bauxite or alumina to reach the mullite composition. The blended charge is fed continuously into the electric arc furnace, where the melt is homogenized at high temperature. Impurities such as iron oxide are reduced and separated, and the purified mullite melt is poured into cooling pits, then crushed and classified into fused mullite aggregates for refractory applications.
Application Fields
- Fused mullite aggregate for high-grade refractory castables and shaped refractories;
- Comprehensive tailings utilization projects for mines and mineral processing plants;
- Kiln furniture, saggars and furnace lining materials for ceramics and steel industries.
